Today, I introduced legislation to move 100 more city owned vacant lots into Philadelphia's new Land Bank. These properties will be prioritized for affordable housing and community-based green space initiatives like the community garden near Ralph Brooks Park and Carpenter Green in Southwest Center City.
We started this campaign in 2011, now almost 5 years later we'll finally get a chance to see the Land Bank in action. 800 publicly-owned properties will be entering the land bank this week. The Campaign to Take Back Vacant Land is a coalition of Philadelphia community, faith and labor groups that joined together to pass a law that gives communities control of vacant land in their neighborhoods. That law was passed in the form of a Land Bank in January of 2014. Today we are focused on holding the city accountable to the values we put into the Land Bank legislation.
